| Pediatrics: A psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental, addictive and emotional disorders, e.g., psychoses, depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders, developmental disabilities, sexual dysfunctions, adjustment reactions, etc. The psychiatrist has had four years of specialized training after obtaining a medical degree. He or she is thus able to understand the biological, psychological and social components of illness and is qualified to order diagnostic laboratory tests and to prescribe medications, as well as to evaluate and treat pschological and interpersonal problems. Dr. Sylvia Irizarry Dr. Sylvia Irizarry has been practicing General Pediatrics since 1995. She is board certified and bi-lingual, fluent in both Spanish and English. Dr. Irizarry has both a bachelors and masters degree in Nutrition from New York University. She completed her pre-medical studies at Columbia University in New York while doing research for her masters degree on the relationship between infant obesity and respiratory infections. Dr. Irizarry obtained her medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and completed her pediatric residency training at Loyola University Medical Center. In addition to being warm and friendly, Dr. Irizarry’s approach to a patient nad family is informative, supportive, respectful and caring. She believes that it is important to work in partnership with parents in the decision making process.
